The shape and line quality of the hands has a fantasy realm to them. With the hands in these pieces, I am trying to show expression by how close the hands are to each other. Where the two faces almost touch, I am using the space to bring some sort of tension, or apprehension.

It was a huge weekend snowstorm that had me trapped at home with eight canvases. That was the environment these paintings were born under. As for the process I kept painting over and the line, or choosing to let the line show, which helped express time and space in a more subtle way. It is kind of like painting in and out of the subject matter. This way of painting in a semi abstract way with the figure has taken me sixteen years and 850 paintings to get to. Before I paint, I spend two hours practicing drawing the faces and hands, so that when I use the brush to draw the lines of the faces and hands it is a singular stroke. As simple as these lines look, they take a lot of prep work. Simplicity is sometimes the hardest to achieve.
