In this piece the pine trees might be simplified, rendered with geometric abstraction, rather than botanically accurate detail. There is a layer of high keyed pink colors representing an intense summer sunset in the back. The shore line has magnificent energy in the use of color. The layered levels of forest and shores give a modern composition for a traditional New England landscape.
I used a Schiele boat and water painting for an influence that had unsettling perspectives and elongated, angular forms to convey inner states rather than objective reality. The "swirly water shapes" are not naturalistic ripples but rather abstracted, almost calligraphic renditions of water.
