The works highlight the societal expectations for women's dress and the realities of such an undertaking. The winter wardrobe of a woman during this period, had an average of four wool skirts – a detail that shows the barriers these women faced and overcame in their pursuits of a high altitude hike of 6,288 feet. The trail at that time was barely a trail. Much of the hike was finding a way to the top with an unreliable hand drawn map.
This painting is almost a portrait of a woman hiker. Her bonnet was part of the outside outer wear for women. Around the Victorian era, women work hats when going outside.
