Ascension invites viewers to contemplate the tenacity and spirit of these women.
Their lives were run by domestic responsibilities: childbirth, cooking, and farming. In fact there hardly were outside active wear for women to move around comfortably in.
These paintings spark a dialogue about the cultural context surrounding females in the outside during the early 19th century and the often-overlooked physical and emotional fortitude required to defy both fashion and hiking with extreme tundra weather conditions. The question is -Who were these women?
